Women, Human Rights & Poverty

What is the Human Right to liberty from Poverty?

A life of dignity is every person's human right. This is true no subject where he or she lives or what his or her sex, race, or ethnic origin may be. And every woman, man, youth and child has basic needs that must be met if he or she is to live in self-respect. A life of poverty means that basic needs go unfulfilled, and basic human rights are violated.More than 1 billion people live in poverty around the world, and a great majority of them are women. Women's poverty results in extensive violations of their human rights. When a woman faces a lack of access to adequate housing, food, or health care, her human rights are violated. When she lives in an unsafe and unhealthy environment or lacks access to clean water, she is not enjoying her fundamental human rights to a life of self-esteem and to an adequate standard of living.

Poverty can also be caused by violations of human rights, particularly women's human right to non-discrimination. When women are deprived of equal access to employment opportunities, are paid less than men for equal work, or are prevented by law or custom from owning or inheriting land, they are made weak to poverty. When women are denied equal access to education, when they do not have the equal right to decide on the number and spacing of children, or when they have an imbalanced share of the responsibility for raising children, their ability to earn an income and to be protected from poverty is greatly compromised.

Smoke Detectors and Americium-241

Modern Uses of Radioactive Isotopes

The past one hundred years has brought the incredible field of nuclear chemistry into all of our lives. We derive numerous benefits from it's applications, yet in most cases, we aren't even aware of them.

In this section, Smoke Detectors and Americium-241

How many of us have smoke detectors in our house? Chances are that a great number of homes have had one or more of these devices installed as an early warning system in case of fire. What most consumers don't know is that many of these units contain a small amount of americium-241. By utilizing the radioactive properties of this material, smoke from a fire can be detected at a very early stage. This early warning capability has saved many lives. In fact, studies have shown that 80% of fire injuries and 80% of fire fatalities occur in homes without smoke detectors.

Why Are Research Methods Important?

Science, at a basic stage attempts to answer questions (such as "why are we aggressive) through careful inspection and collection of data. These answers can then (at a more complex or higher level) be used to further our knowledge of us and our world, as well as help us predict subsequent events and behavior.

At a Practical level, methodology helps US understand and evaluate the merit of all the information we're confronted with everyday. For example, do you believe in the following studies?

1) study indicated that the life span of left-handed people is significantly shorter than those who are right hand dominant.
2) study demonstrated a link between smoking and poor grades.

They are also practical in the work place:

1) Mental Health Profession - relies on research to develop new therapies, and learn which therapies are appropriate and effective for different types of problems and people.
2) Business World - marketing strategies, hiring, employee productivity, etc.

Bold start on new planning vision for Gold Coast

A new plan is underway to deliver the Gold Coast’s Bold Future vision.

Gold Coast City Council has commenced work on a detailed review of its Planning Scheme – the document which guides where and how the city evolves.

When complete, by mid to late 2012, the new scheme is expected to reflect community views and aspirations identified through the recent Bold Future project.

A program management plan to guide the review was outlined to Council’s Sustainable City Future Committee today (24/2). Public input will be invited as the review proceeds.

Committee Chairperson, Councillor Peter Young, said it was good news that work had begun on preparing a new pathway for future planning.

“A complete planning scheme review is possibly the most exhaustive process any local government can undertake,” Cr Young said.

“The current scheme is almost 2000 pages, in four volumes and has 1500 maps. The review will need to revisit the entire scheme and consider new population projections, demographic changes and the expectations of the latest South East Queensland Regional Plan. It will also include considerable public consultation and a lengthy State Government approval process.”

He said that given the enormity of the task, and to comply with State legislation, Council only undertook a complete planning scheme review every eight years.

“So it is a relatively rare opportunity to set fresh directions for the city, to meet new community expectations.

“The people of the Gold Coast, through Bold Future, and Councillors through the Visioning program undertaken in 2008, have identified strong elements and outcomes that will guide and influence the new planning scheme.

“This is our chance to produce a new blueprint for the city’s future, based on those visions.

“In fact a new planning scheme is Council’s single most effective tool for protecting the Gold Coast’s environment and our lifestyle and providing housing choice and job opportunities.

“It can also help us build safer, more accessible communities where we are close to all the services and facilities that improve our lives.”

Cr Young said the program management plan would go before the full Council for endorsement

To choose College

Every day we must take decisions that affect our lives. To choose a college is one of the very most important decisions in life, exceeded only by the choice of a wife or a husband. By looking the decision through financially speaking, college can easily be the second largest expenditure in life, surpassed only by the cost of a house. For four years the colleges’ cost far more than the average expense of a house in some states. College is just more than a preparation for a career. By Often, the person who graduates becomes a different person from what he or she was as an entering first year student. Furthermore, the imprint of a particular college or university can remain for life. After some decades later, people may say knowingly, "He was a “hawk,” or “She went to Monmouth University.” And also for better or worse, the choice of a college has lifelong implications.

To choose a right college was a very stressful process. Another important factor in choosing college was looking for in a college, was that I was receiving a good education for a reasonable price. It will cause you to grow as an individual and learn to become more independent. The process may help you to believe in yourself and in your abilities.

Choosing a college is a biggest decision in your life. You have to go through the whole process by yourself receiving assistance only when needed. Choosing a college may impact your life immensely. What helps to make the process much easier was narrowing your search down to the colleges that possesses qualities for which you were looking. There was so much going on in your life that you may felt like you had no time to think about your future.

Human interrelationship

Although humans currently comprise only about one-half of one percent of the total living biomass on Earth, the human effect on nature is disproportionately large. Because of the extent of human influence, the boundaries between what we regard as nature and "made environments" is not clear cut except at the extremes. Even at the extremes, the amount of natural environment that is free of discernible human influence is presently diminishing at an increasingly rapid pace, or, according to some, has already disappeared.

The development of technology by the human race has allowed the greater exploitation of natural resources and has helped to alleviate some of the risk from natural hazards. In spite of this progress, however, the fate of human civilization remains closely linked to changes in the environment. There exists a highly complex feedback-loop between the use of advanced technology and changes to the environment that are only slowly becoming understood. Manmade threats to the Earth's natural environment include pollution, deforestation, and disasters such as oil spills. Humans have contributed to the extinction of many plants and animals.

Calculator

A calculator is a machine for performing calculations. Although modern calculators often incorporate a general purpose computer, the device is calculated for performing specific operations, rather than for flexibility. Modern calculators are more convenient than most computers, though some Pads are comparable in amount to handheld calculators.

In the past, some calculators were as huge as today's computers. The first automatic calculators were mechanical desktop devices which were replaced by electromechanical desktop calculators, and then by electronic devices using first sung valves, then transistors, then hard-wired integrated circuit logic. New calculators are electrically powered and come in innumerable shapes and sizes varying from cheap, give-away, credit-card sized models to more sturdy adding machine-like models with built-in printers.
